Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Head Nurse/ADN for the area, and the direct supervision of the nurse(s)-in-charge (HHC), follows clearly established procedures in order to perform routine technical duties necessary for the safe and efficient preparation and operation of dialysis equipment for the Renal Service section of Medicine. Maintains dialysis equipment and area supplies, contributing support to continuity of patient care and highest operational standards.

Qualifications

  1. Requires a level of Knowledge normally acquired through the completion of a high school education or equivalent.

  2. Title requires at least six months prior training, and /or experience in Hemodialysis procedures; specific procedures may be learned on the job(incumbent may enter as Hemodialysis Trainee, and receive full “Technician” status after six months.

  3. Work requires attention to routine details such as solution mixes, equipment monitoring procedure, etc. Basic level of analytical ability necessary in order to support other members of the health team in rendering safe patient care.

  4. Interacts with dialysis patients, physicians, nurses and other hospital staff; should have ability to communicate effectively regarding equipment and area procedures, etc.

  5. Incumbent should have physical strength necessary for the lifting and transporting of patients. Work requires and lifting and moving supplies for operations.

Responsibilities

  1. Performs technical tasks necessary for required preparation of Hemodialysis machines for operation: verifies sterility of machinery and equipment before use; checks and primes fluid lines; checks integrity of the dialyzer, transducer protectors, etc. Records activities performed verifying that all preparation duties have been completed. Follows clearly defined instructions when performing all functions.

  2. Prepares solutions ands mixes for use in dialysis treatments (dialysis baths, etc.) following clearly defined procedures, formula, and guidelines. Tests solution concentrations in order to verify that they comply with approved conductivity and temperature limitations; records test results as appropriate. Checks all alarms in order to ensure that they are set and properly operating.

  3. Initiates usage of reverse osmosis system, monitors operation of same during course of treatment, checking various pressure parameters and making adjustments necessary in order to support effective treatment.

  4. May provide assistance with transferring and transporting patients; may obtain and record patient weights.

  5. Completes daily maintenance of dialysis machinery: cleans machines after use: sterilizes machinery as required; samples water and bath solutions for laboratory analysis; repairs and/or replaces commonly worn out components, such as hoses light bulbs, etc. may contact various services representatives in order to have machinery inspected, examined or repaired. Shares responsibility for monthly sterilization of dialysis equipment on rotational basis with other technical team members. Apprises physicians and supervising nurses of emergency-level equipment failure or repair needs.

  6. May be requested to assist in maintaining supply and stock levels of necessary department replacement equipment, solutions and miscellaneous forms and supplies: regularly checks critical supplies; inventories all supplies as required; orders and stocks supplies as necessary. Frequently contact outside vendors and other suppers in order to inquire about supply items, orders, etc. Submits stocking orders to supervisors for approval and ordering.

  7. Performs related duties as directed by supervising nurse(s)-in-charge(HHC) and /or the Associate Director of Nursing(HHC).

Compensation Statement

Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $29.481 - $31.9707 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
